Entró en los Red Hot Chili Peppers para llenar el hueco dejado por la pérdida de su buen amigo Hellel Slovak. Era muy joven y el sonido que aportó a la banda también les trajo el éxito mundial. Entonces vendrían las drogas, las quemaduras y los problemas. Con altibajos y un periodo de abandono John Frusciante ha sido el guitarrista que más ha influido y evolucionado el sonido de los californianos.

Entró cuando John Frusciante se estaba rehabilitando de su adicción a la heroína. Sus aportaciones se pueden escuchar en el álbum "One Hot Minute", sin embargo la banda que se asocia con este guitarrista es Jane´s Adicction, donde dejaría mucha más huella.

Fue el guitarrista original de la banda, quien les aportó todo su carácter funk y cuya perdida marcaría al resto de miembros de la banda. Falleció por una sobredosis en el 88.
