    Biography:
Robert De Niro, Jr. is an actor, director and producer. He jumped to critical acclaim in 1974 for his portrayal of Vito Corleone in “The Godfather Part II,” a role that won him the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor. De Niro’s collaboration with Martin Scorsese began with 1973's "Mean Streets," and earned De Niro an Academy Award for Best Actor for the 1980 film "Raging Bull." He was also nominated for an Academy Award for his roles in Scorsese's "Taxi Driver" (1976) and "Cape Fear" (1991). In addition, he received nominations for "The Deer Hunter" (1978) and "Awakenings" (1990).
De Niro dropped out of high school to pursue acting and soon became a committed practitioner of method acting. He gained 60 pounds (27 kg) and learned how to box for his portrayal of Jake LaMotta in "Raging Bull;" ground his teeth for "Cape Fear;" lived in Sicily for "The Godfather Part II;" worked as a cab driver for "Taxi Driver" and learned to play the saxophone for "New York, New York."
Fearing he had become typecast as a tough guy, De Niro began expanding into comedic roles in the mid-1980s and has had success in such films as "Analyze This" (1999), "Meet the Parents" (2000), and "Meet the Fockers" (2004).
Offscreen, De Niro has directed "A Bronx Tale" (1993) and "The Good Shepherd" (2006). He is also a businessman and co-owner of the film studio TriBeCa Productions, the restaurants Nobu and TriBeCa Grill, and The Greenwich Hotel. He has five children and is currently married to Grace Hightower, his second wife. They live in New York.

    Memorable quotes:
The hardest thing about being famous is that people are always nice to you. You're in a conversation and everybody's agreeing with what you're saying—even if you say something totally crazy. You need people who can tell you what you don't want to hear.
I go to Paris, I go to London, I go to Rome, and I always say, 'There's no place like New York. It's the most exciting city in the world now. That's the way it is. That's it.
I don't like to watch my own movies - I fall asleep in my own movies.
